A Community in My Pocket
- Protected Learning Communities for Personal and Social Learning
- Robert Hart and James Blomfield
- Handheld Learning Conference, London 2006.
Robert Hart of Intuitive Media and James Blomfield of Capel-Le-Ferne Primary School, share a belief that providing for personal learning is not about adapting adult-designed learning environments, opportunities and resources for individual children but about encouraging children to develop their own interests and giving them freedom to follow their own curiosity in their own way and enabling them to share their ideas with interested friends as well as teachers.
Intuitive Media has carried out extensive research for DCSF into the children in its protected online learning communities, with a view to understanding their needs for personal learning.

The rise of affordable Internet-connected mobile devices and Protected Learning Communities allows children to participate in personal and social learning from almost anywhere - in the classroom, on the bus or at home.
In Protected Learning Communities, UK children are communicating freely and safely online with children from around the corner and across the world. By sharing interests and working together with common purpose, children of all backgrounds can develop friendship and empathy - the essential ingredients for intercultural understanding as well as for social learning.
Robert (as a provider) and James (as a classroom practitioner) share the results of IM's research for DCFS and what they have learned from running and using Protected Learning Communities SuperClubsPLUS and GoldStarCafe and what it is that makes for successful personal and social learning.
