    GoldStarCafe for Secondary

GoldStarCafe is a Safe Social Learning Network where 11-16 year olds can meet friends across the UK and around the world, be creative and learn ICT, Literacy, Global Citizenship and a range of skills across the whole curriculum together.

If you want somewhere safer on the Web where your students can make friends, have fun and learn, then GoldStarCafe is for you.

Professional mediators watch over your students while they communicate and learn together at home, at school, in after-school clubs and youth organizations.

“I am really excited about the GoldStarCafe because it builds on so much experience to offer a wonderful, secure online learning environment. But as if that was not enough, it also offers a unique global dimension too and recognizes the importance of family.” - Professor Stephen Heppell

“This place is cool, it’s fun and its mature and advanced. There’s something here for everyone!” - Sarah (12)

“An excellent site for youngsters. I'm delighted my daughter uses it. Keep up the good work. It's comforting to know there's a safer site for kids.” - Joan Finlayson, Parent, Arbroath

    Safe
Intuitive Media rigourously validates all members through their schools. Professional mediators monitor all communication and content and constantly watch out for your children and keep them safe. Intuitive Media works closely with CEOP and ChildNet-International to make sure everyone is as safe as possible. Please see: Keeping Children Safe Online.

    Social
The communities are available from breakfast to bedtime - on school and home computers and mobile devices, so it’s non-stop learning for your children at school and at home. Students from different backgrounds and cultures keep in touch with friends, share interests and help each other. The home-school projects help parents get involved with their students’ school work. The communities are ideal for elective home education.

    Respect
Students learn how to express their creative ideas online in all media - text, sound, images and animation. They learn to write and communicate, to work and learn together and to be part of a mutually respectful online community. They learn how to relate to students from different backgrounds, from the UK and around the world. They learn a host of useful ICT skills and earn Credits, which they can trade for extra features. They learn to be safe and responsible online citizens. In the process they have fun and help each other with their schoolwork and homework.

    Creative Learning
In the communities students learn by experience. Here are just a few of the things they can do in their safe personal online learning spaces:

      Communicate
Email - build friendships around the world and collaborate effectively and safely
Forums - discuss global issues, current affairs, wildlife, music, student’s concerns and their school work
      Create
Home Pages - build secure personal websites on hobbies & school work (with their own words, images and sounds and content from the huge Media Library)
Project Pages - create pages dedicated to school projects
      Collaborate & contribute
Webrings - join shared interest groups
Zines - edit, read and write for online magazines
School Pages - contribute to collaborative school projects
Student Voice - share their thoughts in research projects
Events - meet famous authors and people in a range of careers and from from around the world

    Personalised Learning
The students join learning projects and events such as: a discussion on global issues in the One World Zine; a writing club with a popular author; a Hot Seat with an Olympic hopeful athlete, an artist or an astronomer; an interview with Anne Frank or Tutankhamun or a Science day. There’s something for every student as they follow their own interests and work at their own pace and level.

And their achievements and contribution to the community are recognized and rewarded with the GEM Awards challenges, through which they learn a huge range of cross curriculum skills including: Editing and Writing, Life Skills, Learning & Personal Organization Skills Citizenship, Understanding Global Issues. Students develop their social skills and global citizenship. Please see: Personal and Social Learning Online.

    Credit where it’s due
Students can earn credits for making valuable contributions to the community and trade them for more features like graphic email backgrounds, smileys or more instant messenger buddies. Students can earn Mediator Credits for helping others and they can award each other Peer Credits for useful forum posts, interesting home pages etc. They can even set up online enterprises and trade information, designs etc for credits. Students can lose credits for antisocial behaviour or for breaking community rules.

    Peer Mentoring
The best way to learn is to teach, and in GoldStarCafe each child can be a teacher. The students all help each other with their schoolwork and homework. The most dedicated GoldStarCafe members can advance to become Cafe Crew and mentor other community members.

    Independent Research says it WORKS!
Independent research by the University of Hertfordshire and Learning Teaching Scotland proves that IM's social learning networks support personalized learning across the curriculum and helps raise standards. Children extend their Literacy, ICT, ESafety, Design and Citizenship skills. Their achievements are rewarded with celebratory badges and community Credits which they can exchange for additional features. Please see: Independent Evaluations of IM Projects .
